ADVENT WEEK 1 ~ HOPE
WENT UP Luke 2:4-5
So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee
to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David,
because he belonged to the house and line of David.
He went there to register with Mary,
who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child.
REFUGE Psalm 119:114
You are my refuge and my shield; I have put my HOPE in your word.
QUESTION What might Joseph and Mary's journey have been like as they "went up" literally. The map above shows the topography they journeyed and climbed to get to Bethlehem from Nazareth. No doubt a very challenging journey, which took considerable time and exhausting effort as the terrain become more desolate, barren, mountainous as they climbed. When they arrived, they took shelter from the mountain caves themselves; no room at the inn. It was a life changing journey. They later returned to Nazareth but were never the same. as they went onward as God guided, and thus wrote history by their life choices and journey, hard pressed as it was. What are the parallels to your own life?
PRAYER: Lord, hear my prayers ...
Traditions From Around The World
China
The Christians in China light their homes with beautiful paper lanterns during Advent. Santa is called Dun Che Lao Ren. The children are encouraged to hang stockings like their counterparts in the US. Many of the traditions for celebration among the Christian communities in China were imported by the missionaries that delivered the message of Advent.
